What to wear for new job at antique store?

November 23rd, 2011 Posted in Antique Store Tags: , ,

Question by xo_duckie_xo: What to wear for new job at antique store?
My best friends mom owns a antique store, and she recently gave me a job there. Tomorrow is my second day, the first day I dressed a little dressy, and I felt uncomfortable. I basically run the cash register and put out new items, so I’m running around the entire time.
Any ideas on what to wear? Its supposed to be rather nice outside, so don’t worry too much about the weather.
Thanks! :)

The best routes to take are to research the process of starting a business as well as the industry you’re interested in.

I recommend checking out the SBA, Entrepreneur, The Start Up Journal & Nolo. All 4 are great informational resources for the new/small business owner. I posted links for you in the source box.

Associations may be a good avenue to explore. These organizations will address many of the thoughts, questions and concerns you’ll inevitably have as well as many you haven’t anticipated yet. See the source box for some relevant links.

Research, research, research – this cannot be stressed enough. Read as much as you can about the industry. Here are some book titles that are relevant:

* Start and Run a Profitable Retail Business by Jim Dion, Ted Topping
* Retail Business Kit for Dummies by Rick Segel
* Specialty Shop Retailing: How to Run Your Own Store Revised by Carol L. Schroeder
* So You Want To Own The Store: Secrets to Running a Successful Retail Operation by Mort Brown

There are plenty of free informational resources out there. Check the source box for links to articles.

Hope that helps! I wish you much success & happiness in all your ventures!

Can Your Store Benefit From Selling Handmade Jewelry?

Can Your Store Benefit From Selling Handmade Jewelry?

If you have a retail store or boutique these days you have to stand out from the crowd. With so many products available, providing handmade jewelry and unique gift ideas for your customers makes your store stand out and people take notice. Variety is the key to great sales. Provide your customers a wide range of styles, shapes, colors and prices. Offer a choice of materials; stones, beads, shells, resins and metals. You will find that casual sales become repeat customers if you select a great variety of unique handcrafted jewelry and gifts that will suit everyones personal style! Aim to give your customers an unique shopping experience, unusual high quality products and excellent personal service.

Where do you find suppliers for wholesale handmade jewelry and gifts? You have lots of choices but obviously the easiest and fastest way would be online. Just Google or Yahoo! search “wholesale handmade jewelry” to find suppliers for your store, can’t get much easier than that! You can also search “handmade jewelry directories”, most web directories even have a separate section for unique handmade jewelry. You can search anywhere, anytime; whenever it is convenient for you. Today you can find everything you need online without all the expenses of attending the traditional Wholesale Jewelry and Gift Shows. Everyone has a contact us page so you can ask any questions you may have if its not already in the FAQ. Online companies try to give you as much information about their products as they can. This is hard to absorb in the hustle and bustle of shows but comes naturally when you are relaxed and interested in the product. You will know the special features and techniques used to make the handmade jewelry and gifts. This information will help you to sell the products better.

If you are more a hands-on type, wholesale jewelry and gift shows are the next best option. At these shows you will see the actual products but attending these shows can be quite costly, tiring and they are only held at certain times of the year. The wide range of products available might overwhelm first time buyers but you’ll quickly learn how to narrow your search to find the items you want to see. You may just find that you can sell the handcrafted products better when you have made a connection with a real person. Pay attention to how they sell their products to you and you can carry that over to when you are selling their products to your own customers. The better the personal connection with a product, the better your sales will be!

Handcrafted artisan jewelry will attract new customers to your store. Many jewelry artists have a loyal following who will seek you out in order to buy their favorite artists’ jewelry. Look to provide a range of products and prices. People generally look for that extra special piece once in a while; for anniversaries or weddings. Have some outstanding pieces for them and to draw people into your store. More reasonably priced jewelry will sell more often to more people. Pay special attention to what we call the “added value” jewelry – this is handmade jewelry that looks more expensive than it is. This is the impulse buy type of jewelry; who can say no to unique handcrafted jewelry that is affordable and you can wear it every day?

Your goal is to make your customers come back time after time to check out your great selection of handmade jewelry. Whatever the occasion handcrafted jewelry will continue to keep them coming back for more!

Antique Store Renovation

September 29th, 2010 Posted in Antique Store Tags: , ,

Owner George Evans walks us through the upcoming renovation of his Antique on Union building, formerly the Grand Depot, by building out the basement, adding a new stairwell, opening up the mezzanine to a roof skylight, and restoring the original marquee to the front entrance. Go to Design2Share.com for home design tips, advice, and videos.

This video shows the MediaGlass messaging system installed at the Pavilion Antique store in San Anselmo, CA, just north of San Francisco. Line art animations of antique furniture move and spin on the window, for a 3D hologram feel. The window is kept completely clear, so merchandise is visible, while the Christmas tree and the animated falling snowflakes complement each other. The point of differentiation with this technology is that it allows one to put animated messaging on completely clear surfaces. Nothing else does that. You can use posters. You can use opaque LCD screens. You can hang a TV in the window. You can frost a window to make it translucent so it catches part but not all of a projected image. But none of the alternatives keep the window clear, so you can use the window for what it is, a transparent barrier, and still see through it. With all alternative technologies, you might as well have a wall instead of a window. As we all know, windows are better and invite customers into the store. Keep your windows. Use them for dynamic messaging with SuperImagings MediaGlass! Please visit pavillionantiques.com for more information about the store or its location, or superimaging.com for further information about our MediaGlass projection system.

Christmas cards – Store bought vs. handmade?

Question by Sam S: Christmas cards – Store bought vs. handmade?
If you received a handmade Christmas card from a family member or friend *last* year, would you be offended if that person sent a store-bought card *this* year?

I’ve been making handmade cards, but don’t want anyone to be upset next year if I send boxed cards!

Best answer:

Answer by MotherBear1975
If they’re offended, they’re just plain silly. At least you’re sending them a card. It isn’t all that common anymore. Unless they’re complete twits, they’ll realize that sometimes life catches up with you and you just don’t have all the time you used to have.
