I have a question about my ANTIQUE PAINTINGS?

March 20th, 2011 Posted in Antique Paintings Tags: , , ,

Question by Robert: I have a question about my ANTIQUE PAINTINGS?
I have two paintings by an E.T Parris dated 1834. They look like they are engravings. One was done by Thomas Woolnoth and the other by C.E Wagstaff. I do not know allot about art and I am having a hard time finding anything about these artist to see if they are of any value. The websites I go to want me to pay money to check auction prices.

Any help or guidance would be helpful.

Are they engravings or are they paintings? Understand that these media are NOT the same.

I’m going to guess that these are prints — that is, engravings — and E.T. Parris may be the publisher, Woolnoth and Wagstaff the actual artists. The problem is that in order to get an appraisal, a valuation, you are going to HAVE to show the pieces to a professional expert or pay the websites to check the prices — or both. There is no way around that.

You can’t expect professional information and expertise for free any more than you would expect to see a doctor or dentist for free. Art experts and scholars spend years studying and working to earn their expertise, just as other professionals do. Why should you demand their services for nothing?

Question by casper_04011: antique paintings?
I have a couple of paintings by an artist, last name Schartt.
Does this name mean anything to anyone? The painting are more than 40yrs old.
Thanks

I found only one Schartt (see first ref below) circa 1889 – a John schartt but there is no trace that he ever painted.
On the other hand, I wonder if you did not misread the signature (sometimes they are difficult to read) and if the name is not Schwartz. In which case there is -was- a Barbara Schwartz who died in the late 70′s, and a Gerald Schwartz, still alive but he says he painted mainly landscapes since 40 years, that could be your man.
