Question by Leann C: Why are there spots on my antique mirror?
I recently inherited an antique make-up vanity that belonged to my Great Grandmother. The mirror has some spots on it that I guess are behind the mirror (i.e. they can’t be cleaned off). I have noticed this before on old mirrors, does anyone know what causes this?

Answer by ms_know_it_all Those spots are actually areas where the silver (that allows the reflection) has come off the back of the glass. The only way to fix it is to replace the mirror, which could actually de-value the piece if it is a true antique. It all depends on if it is truly a valuable piece or something that is just special to you because it was your Great Grandmother’s. You could always take it to an antique dealer to get their idea of what it is worth.
