why are handmade leather bags are expensive whereas shouldn’t machine made are more consistent ?

Question by layhoma2004: why are handmade leather bags are expensive whereas shouldn’t machine made are more consistent ?
What is the hype in handmade goods such as designer handbags that is ridiculously priced. Shouldn’t machine made products are more better in quality because of consistency ? Is it just a show to put up to jack up the price or is there a real practical reason to justify the means and cost ??

didn’t quite understand the entire quetion but the jist of it. The reason handmade bags are more expesnive than machine made ones is because machines can turn out 100s of bags in the time it takes to make one by hand you have to pay the person making the bag by the hour.

Q&A: I bought a used handmade wicker basket, signed and dated on the bottom. How can I find out about the artist?

Question by Sue from Maple Grove: I bought a used handmade wicker basket, signed and dated on the bottom. How can I find out about the artist?
It’s a terrific basket, with one handle that opens to a teardrop shape on each side, attached in two places on each side, so it moves. Very clever! It is signed “C. Ryks ’89″.

Thanks in advance to all of you.

Where Should You Buy Handmade?

Where Should You Buy Handmade?

Shop handmade online, it’s easier!  Buying handmade online is the most popular way to shop handmade. I know, at first this may sound surprising. But when you really think about it, it makes since to buy handmade online.

You can find a wider variety of handmade online then in any traditional craft show, because you are not limited by physical location. The handmade you love is delivered to your home, sure you have to wait a few days and yes there are small shipping and handling fees for some handmade items; but it still doesn’t compare to the cost of  gas you spend and a babysitter. Oh and let’s not forget it saves you valuable time and the hassle of lugging around your handmade finds at a traditional craft show.

No matter what handmade you are looking for, you can find it online. You may even find some unique handmade items that you have never encountered before like hand-painted pottery jewelry, pop art made from your very own photos, or hand knit protective monster cases for your digital devices.

Don’t worry about customer service! When you buy handmade online you will find that handmade artists are still very customer friendly even offering money back guarantees, the ability to customize your handmade item and some even offer gift wrapping.

But if you are still not convinced that buying handmade online can be fun, then you should visit a virtual craft show like HandmadeCraftShow.com. Yes, you can now find virtual craft shows online that gives you the best of what traditional craft shows have to offer.

Christmas cards – Store bought vs. handmade?

August 21st, 2010 Posted in Handmade Christmas Cards Tags: , , , ,

Question by Sam S: Christmas cards – Store bought vs. handmade?
If you received a handmade Christmas card from a family member or friend *last* year, would you be offended if that person sent a store-bought card *this* year?

I’ve been making handmade cards, but don’t want anyone to be upset next year if I send boxed cards!

Answer by MotherBear1975
If they’re offended, they’re just plain silly. At least you’re sending them a card. It isn’t all that common anymore. Unless they’re complete twits, they’ll realize that sometimes life catches up with you and you just don’t have all the time you used to have.

How would you start marketing handmade jewelry?

August 19th, 2010 Posted in Handmade Jewelry Tags: , , , ,

Question by iamme210: How would you start marketing handmade jewelry?
My mom makes handmade jewelry out of sterling silver and natural stones, and most recently enamel. She is always receiving complements on her pieces, and has had one bracelet featured in a jewelry magazine, as well as a few pieces in galleries. But she wants to start selling them on a larger basis, how could she start doing that? Does anyone know where she can find a representative? Thanks!
hey, thank you so much for responding, your answers were very helpful!

Rather than trying to find a representative (that could be difficult to find or costly), I would start locally. Take samples to locally owned businesses that might sell that type of jewelery product and see if they would be interested in selling it. It could be on a consignment basis. Another option would be to rent a booth at a craft fair or event… there are a lot of Christmas opportunities coming up. Also a website might be a good idea. You could sell online, but it’s also a good marketing tool. That way when you have opportunities to sell or make a sale, you can give out your contact and website to encourage further sales. If you are successful on a smaller scale, it will probably naturally progress and new opportunities will come along to expand. Good luck!
