Question by Kevin: Where can I buy custom mattresses for antique bed frames?
I’ve just recently purchased an antique bed frame from a store, and they’ve told me that I have to supply the mattress myself.
Know any good companies out there that make custom mattresses for antiques?

The bed size you bought is probably something called a 3/4 bed. Which is between the size of a twin and a double. There are 2 things you can do that are relatively inexpensive. Custom mattresses could be cost you well over $ 1000.00
1. Get a twin mattress. Have a piece of foam cut to the size that you need and attach it to the twin mattress with the same joiner they use for king sized beds that come apart. http://www.ehow.com/how_5561616_make-twin-beds-king-bed.html
2. This bed should have springs or slats that were used to support the mattress. Put a board over that which will sustain a double mattress and secure it with straps. You can then put your double mattress or mattress and boxspring over that. The bed will be about 2 inches wider on both sides of the frame easily camouflaged with bedding and pillows.

Can you post a picture of it?
You could check the back of the headboard and the inside of the side rails to see if there is anything to identify the manufacturer or craftsman’s name. It may even have an item number imprinted. It would at least help you to do some research. Or take a picture and send it to a dealer to help you at least identify the style or period even if they don’t do the appraisal. An antique would be 100 years old..
Good luck.

Question by Stephanie: Antique Bed?
I purchased an antique headboard and footboard. There is a single hook to hold what would hold a mattress without a box spring….doe’s anyone know what that piece is called and where I can find one?
I basically need the “platform” the mattress would set upon- whatever that piece is called. It should sort of be like a box spring itself, but more like a tension spring frame….it has to be able to go over the hook on the head board and footboard.

if you’re talking about the hook on the end of the side rails, you can sometimes find them at a hardware store.
