Question by sunnyD: Where to start with antique engagement rings?
I just don’t know where to look, can internet sites be trusted? Also, I want a ring thats actually worth something, but I like the idea of a ruby ring, and they don’t seem to be worth much at all.

What era, in your opinion has the best rings?

Look for antique stores via the net then go to the local ones 1910-35 seem to be more ornate as well as the mid 1800. Rubies are worth less then diamonds but settings also play a role.

When looking at antique shops you will find prices vary so shop around enjoy the hunt and pick what will appeal to you long term a wedding ring etc. is meant to be a life time purchase not an investment opportunity.

the victorian era is probably the most popular, but i love art deco designs.

here are a couple of sites to look at.

http://antiquerubyrings.net/ this site has the various eras listed and described. they have many great looking pieces which range from 3 or 4 thousand to several hundred dollars….one piece i really love is the wedding band on their third page which is diamonds and rubies together set in white gold which would look stunning with a ruby engagement ring. the band by iteself is 2660 dollars so there is plenty of value there.

several lovely selections from a few hundred to about 1800 or so.

  3. Go to a jeweler that handles estate jewelry. Usually, that is not a chain, but a local jeweler.

Also, you can look for antiques dealers that handle estate jewelry.

You will need a jeweler’s appraisal to know if it is worth much. Estate jewelry usually sells for less than new jewelry, because it is pre owned.
